Vasantha Obeysekera after a long lay off from film making is back with a triangular love story- "Salelu Warama" (The Web of Love) woven around two undergraduates and a divorcee.

The film has been selected as a National entry to the competitive section of the 33rd Indian International Film Festival to be held in New Delhi from October 1 to 10 and Vasantha will be in India this week to participate in the event.

'Salelu Warama' stars Sangeetha Weeraratne, Kamal Addararachchi, Tony
Ranasinghe, Pradeep Senanayake, Soumya Liyanage, Janak Premalal and Nayana Kumari.

Suren (Kamal Addararachchi) and Priyanka (Sangeetha Weeraratne) are undergraduates of the same university. It was love at first sight for Suren.

Priyanka is however already engaged to Sunil a divorcee who had left for employment abroad.

Priyanka initially rejects Suren's advances without revealing her relationship with Sunil. Rumours begin to circulate that Sunil is having an affair with a foreign woman.

A sense of dejection overcomes Priyanka. Suren's ardent and sincere affection slowly but surely attracts her and she too falls deeply in love with him.

But Sunil's unexpected arrival and Priyanka's equally unforeseen decision to go back to her former love leaves Suren bitter.

The web of love and jealousy in which the trio are entangled lead the film to an unexpected dramatic finale.

Beginning a cinema career as co-screenplay writer in 'Sath Samudura' (Seven Seas), which was Sri Lanka's official entry for the Moscow International film Festival in 1967 Mr. Obeysekera has done films like "Palangetiyo" (Grasshoppers), "Dadayama" (the Hunt) and "Kadapathaka Chaya" (Reflection in a mirror) some of which have become benchmark films in Sri Lankan cinema history.

Speaking on "Salelu Warama" Vasantha Obeysekera said "the structure is a triangular love story involving three youngsters. The film narrates a few personal conflicts which no one understands as affecting those around them and the society in general."

On the choice of two undergraduates to depict the two main characters Mr. Obeysekera said "I wanted to use a section of the youth classed as intellectuals to convey my idea more powerfully". "But when it comes to love they forget their place or position. They do hardly foresee the final outcome of their actions," the director explained.

"Failure to control intense feeling turning to violence is nothing new to this society.

I wanted to display the futility of certain actions of our youth. These happen everyday and my effort was to depict a reflection of our own society," he reiterated.

"But can we single out and put the blame on them for these? Mr. Obeysekera questioned. "There is no one to be blamed for the break down of the relationship. Only thing that is evident is that our society lacks communication with each other and specially between parents and children" the director added.

Asked about using mostly a young cast and working with them in his latest effort Vasantha Obeysekera said "I do not want to comment on my cast. But I see a lot of talent in them".

"And it is not easy to work with me. I am like a task master. I myself write the script for my films and I have my own inner opinion about it and how it has to come out. It is I who make the decisions even though I welcome the opinions of others.

He echoed the views of Alfred Hitchcock when he said 'director is the shepherd'.The technical crew in this film are Elmo Halide as editor, Lal Harendranath as art director and production executive is Nihal Sanjaya. The musical score is by Rohana Weerasinghe and the film is produced by Soma Edirisinghe.

"Salelu Warama" will be released on EAP circuit shortly.

'Spy Kids 2': The Fun Never Ends
By Harinda Vidanage

Daryl Sabara as Juni Cortez, Alexa Vega as Carmen Cortez

This is the sequel to the Spy Kids movie released last year titled Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams. With most of the movies released this year focusing on markets elsewhere Spy Kids 2 is the only movie behind the Harry Potter movie to be released in November, totally dedicated to kids entertainment.

The next plus point is the fact that this is a blend of high tech gadgets and intriguing turns which seems never ending. The special effects made 99% out of state of the art computer graphics systems bring out true to life images of high tech spy equipment and bizarre creatures thanks to the DreamWorks studios.

The director of the movie renowned for action adventure movies of different flavor Robert Rodriguez is famous for his movies such as The Faculty and Desperado. The Cast includes Daryl Sabara as Juni Cortez, Alexa Vega as Carmen Cortez, Antonio Banderas as Gregorio Cortez, Carla Gugino as Ingrid Cortez which complete the family of spies but this season the grand parents join in to strengthen the collective battle formation of the Cortezes in their adventurous assignments and rescue missions.

Spy Kids 1 focused on the kids as supporting the work of their parents. This season Carmen and Juni are agents about to set off on their own solo mission, or so they think. But this time it will take the whole family and then some daredevil and intelligent moves to keep the world safe from a mysterious volcanic island populated by a mad scientist and his imaginative menagerie of creatures, an island where none of their gadgets work and they have to rely on their wits and each other to save the day. The movie also sees them challenged by another pair of spy siblings, Gary (O'Leary) and Gerti Giggles. When the adult spies are taken out of commission (again), the two teams are all that's left to save the world on a coveted mission that sends them all to an island off the coast of Madagascar filled with bizarre creatures.

The bounty the agents are after is the so called Transmooker device capable of destroying the whole world which some mysterious agents from a rogue institution steal from the US president and flee to the Island but surprise awaits the pursuing parties who realize the real device has become a part of the Island.
The movie is fun to watch and also packed with good humor and plenty of action also loaded with innovative gadgetry even to make James Bonds Q borrow some from the kids or simply grow green with envy.
