'The Touch' & 'Legend Of Zu': Hong Kong Double
By Harinda Vidanage
Hong Kong film makers have shot back to the limelight with two mega projects being released this year. Earlier Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon took the world cinema by storm, both these two new movies The Touch and Legend of Zu seem to be following on its trail specially The Touch already getting recognition among the Western film critics and the Legend of Zu a much viewed movie among the oriental movie goers.

'The Touch'
The movie is the debut of Peter Pau a globally acclaimed cinematographer who won an Oscar for his work in the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and the production is by Michelle Yeogh who also is the leading star in the movie and again she played the leading female character in the hit Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

The movie opens with a spectacular acrobatic show. In her role as an acrobatic performer Yin in the film, Michelle spends totally 11 minutes in the air. It is more challenging than the Qinggong (lightening skill) style "flying" used in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The acrobats are the key in this movie as the story evolves around the heritage and the duty of this acrobatic family.

The cast includes other than Michelle Yeogh, Ben Chaplin, Richard Roxburgh as Karl the ruthless antique collector and fortune hunter and Brandon Chang as Tong Yin's brother. The movie goes as in a time of great danger, the Monks of Dunhuang hid the Sharira a Relic purported to contain the pure essence of a Holy Man in the Buddhist religion. To protect this greatest of treasures, it was placed where no ordinary human being would ever be able to reach. However, it is destined to happen that someday the Sharira will be recovered. To ensure that it could be retrieved when such time came, the Monks turned to a family of acrobats. For hundreds of years this family has trained, passing on the skills required to perform the ultimate leap to recover when the time is at hand

And the movie takes a turn when a man from Yin's past, shows up with a Medallion - the Heart of Dunhuang - a key to unlock the secrets, a clue to unveil the legend of the Sharira. Together they embark on a hazardous journey to rediscover what her ancestors once protected. Following closely on their trail is Karl, who will stop at nothing to get his hands on the valuable treasures.

The story is cited as on the same genre of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon but it does not contain a multitude of martial arts combat but is more like an Indiana Jones adventure and special effects which are masterly crafted and the distinct difference is its setting in modern times.

'The Legend of Zu'
This is a remake of the early eighties movie "Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain" dubbed 'The' Kung Fu Fantasy movie ever made and was released in Hong Kong simultaneously with the release of Star Wars in the USA.

The new movie titled the Legend Of Zu is a mesmerizing treat of fantasy, Kung Fu and special effects. Starring Ekin Cheng, Samo Hung, Zhang Ziyi, Louis Koo, Cecilia Cheung, Kelly Lin and directed by Tsui Hark and this remake comes complete with massive amount of state-of-the-art CGI and kick-ass fight choreography from Yuen Wo Ping, whom most know from his work on The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon .

The story evolves around the clans in first world or Heaven fighting an evil monster and the only mortal character is played by a leading star in the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Zhang Ziyi.It is basically a story of a battle between the good and the evil appearing in the form of a demon called Insomnia. Once you've got that you can sit back and enjoy the spectacle of one special effect driven battle after another, each more spectacular than the one preceding it. King Sky's (Ekin Cheng) character seems to be the central focus as he battles against his former comrade, the winged Red (Louis Koo).

Despite the lack of any character or plot development and very few real martial arts one can find 'the Legend of Zu' a fairly enjoyable experience, purely because of the stunning special effects that were impressive and also the film moves along at a fair pace so there is always something to keep your attention.

The movie is more on the line of Mortal Kombat series and Storm Riders. This year did not witness the release of any movie with the Genre of purely martial arts and this will be a treat to all martial art and fantasy movie fans.
