Cleansing the skin
Is a cold cream or a cleansing cream better for cleansing the skin?

Experts say it's a matter of personal preference. Cold cream is the prototype of all cleansing and emollient creams and lotions. Prior to its development, people had to rely on plain animal and vegetable oils to cleanse and lubricate the skin.

The first cold cream was a mixture of oil, water, beeswax and rose petals. The beeswax acted as an emulsifier to keep the oil and water mixed; rose petals provided fragrance. When applied to the skin for cleansing, the oil picked up and suspended the dirt, oil and other skin debris so it could be wiped off. If left on the skin, it acted as a lubricant or emollient (moisturizer). The product was called a "cold" cream because it felt cooling as the water evaporated.

Modern cold creams, cleansing creams and emollient creams bear little resemblance to the original, crude cold cream, although the basic formula of all modern creams is a variation of the original cold cream formula: an oil-and-water emulsion. There is now an infinite variety of creams, lotions and mousses with many different textures, consistencies, colours, smells and cleansing qualities. For example, a product may be formulated so that it can be rinsed from the skin rather than wiped off. Surfactants are often added to increase the cleansing qualities and aid removal. Products formulated to remove heavy theatrical make-up may contain more oils. Products for oily skin are modified to remove more of the natural oils and fats from the skin, whereas creams formulated for dry skin may contain ingredients to reduce the product's oil-removing properties and/or to replace oils removed in the cleansing process.

Cold creams are generally heavier; they produce more drag on the skin than cleansing creams. Some women prefer the lighter feel of cleansing creams.
