Avurudu
on wheels for MPs
By Shelani Perera
Whatever the struggle of the common people, their representatives
are having a happy new year with high-powered semi luxury vehicles
coming their way.
The brand new vehicles imported under an Indian credit line and
costing about Rs. 1.7 million duty free have already been handed
over to 90 MPs and more than hundred others are to pick them up
before the end of the month.
Premier Ranil
Wickremesinghe, Ministers Karu Jayasuriya, Mahinda Samarasinghe,
Arumugan Thondaman and nine JVP parliamentarians form a minority
group who have said they do not want new vehicles.
While a vast
majority of MPs have opted for Tata Safaris, Scorpios or Boleros,
Ministers K. N. Choksy and Milinda Moragoda have settled for the
less expensive Marutis.
Parliamentary
Affairs Minister A. H. M. Azwer told The Sunday Times that the vehicles
were not luxury types but more of utility value. |
