Malani earns kudos for versatility

'Malani Fonseka is one of the two outstanding names in Sri Lankan cinema' said Bandula Padmakumara a member of the Organizing Committee of the Malani Fonseka Felicitation Ceremony.

"Lester James Pieris being the other giant in the local cinema, Malani after her great contribution to the local cinema easily occupies the next slot" said Mr. Padmakumara at a conference held to inform the media about the arrangements made to celebrate the part played by the versatile and veteran actress in the field of cinema throughout the last four decades.

A committee comprising journalists, actors, film directors and those others both involved in and out of the industry has planned a number of events to felicitate Malani Fonseka.

Coming into the theatre, Malani acted in the play titled 'Noratha Ratha' in 1963 which launched her on a successful stage career culminating in her acting in 14 plays in the following five years time.

Making her debut in the film 'Punchi Baba' in 1968 she has acted in 142 films during her 35-year cinematic career in addition to many other roles she played backstage on both the silver and small screen. During this time she won almost all the annual awards in various categories in the local scene. Some of them are Deepashika awards for the popular actress, Presidential awards for the Best actress, and Sarasavi awards for both Popular and Best actress many times. In addition she also was honoured with OCIC and Swarna Sanka awards for talent and creative acting ability.

Without any formal schooling she displayed her inborn talent for acting in almost all the roles she played on screen.

Even though her talent was exploited for financial gain by some directors film makers like Lester James Pieris, Dharmasena Pathiraja, Wasantha Obeysekera, Sugathapala Senarath Yapa, Amaranath Jayathilake, Sunil Ariyaratne, Wijeya Dharmasri and Parakrama Niriella were able to identify the versatility in this actress. Malani was the first Sri Lankan actress to reach international heights winning awards at Moscow International Film Festival in 1975 and New Delhi Film Festival in 1977.

To felicitate this gifted actress a number of events have been organised and the main event- the film-week with twenty-one films in which Malani played lead roles will be held starting from April 23 with three shows at 10 am, 2 pm and 6 pm daily at Elphinstone theatre till April 29.

The schedule will be as follows:- April 23 -'Thushara' 'Adare Hithenawa Dekama' and 'Punchi Baba', April 24 'Suhada Pathum', 'Anthima Re' and 'Aradana', April 25- 'Hondata Hondai', 'Higana Kolla and 'Siri Medura', April 26- 'Madu Samaya' 'Susi' and 'Nidhanaya', April 27- 'Kawda Rajah', 'Kasthuri Suwanda' and 'Siripala and Ranmenika', April 28- 'Wasana', 'Edath Suraya Adath Suraya and Hathara Denama Surayo' and April 29 'Induta Malmitak', 'Awa Soya Adare' and 'Udu Sulanga' will be screened. This would be the only occasion that 'Udu Sulanga' directed by H. D. Premaratne will be screened as it was not screened earlier and was held up due to the production problem. The programme will end with the final ceremony at BMICH on April 30- which is Malani's birthday.


'Patok Palama':Old theme on a new time belt
'Patok Palama'- 'Cactus Bridge' is the miniplay scheduled to be telecast in the new teledrama belt, at 7.00 pm every Tuesday on Swarnavahini.

The teledrama consisting of 18 episodes was directed by Sumith Kumara while G. Mampitiya does the production. In the cast are Jagath Benaragama, Ruwanthi Mangala, Edward Guna-wardena, Biyanka Shayamali, Manike Attanayake, Daya Alwis, Suminda Sirisena, Daminda Samarakkody, and Chamila Attanayaka.

Scripted by Daya Sooriyarachchi, 'Pathok Palama' shows how the shortsighted policies of young people could be detrimental to themselves as to well as society.

The story talks of two young people; boy and a girl who are coming from two different back grounds and fall in love with each other. They are determined to go ahead with their plans despite the opposition from their parents.

Coming from Kandyan stock, Heentenne School Master and his wife, Heentenne Hamine are a peaceful couple who lead a traditional family life.

At the commencement of the story, their son Jagath Heentenne is preparing for the University Entrance Examination.

Meanwhile he falls in love with a young girl, Nirmala. Parents come to know about this clandestine love affair through the secret information supplied -by Punchirala, the domestic aide. Mrs. Heentenna summons Nirmala's mother warns her to stop her daughter's connection with Jagath.

Worried about this information, Nirmala's mother Seelawathie, chides her daughter about this. However the love affair continues unabated. Ultimately Jagath, disregarding his hereditary lineage, elopes with Nirmala and gets married to her.

This results him being cut off from the Heentenne family. The newly wedded couple settles in a small house situated close to the residence of Dabares' who are loyal to Jagath's parents. Dabare is a foreman working in a Project and lives with his wife and daughter. Jagath has no job and his wife gets conceived during this time. The young couple faces a lot of financial problems.

They realize that their married life is not easy as they expected. Finally Jagath finds a job as an embalmer in a funeral undertakers firm. It is at this time Nirmala gives birth to their baby. Financial problems get more and more acute leading to family conflicts.

At the end Jagath decides to rob Dabare's house.

This robbery leads to a number of unexpected incidents in Jagath and Nirmala's family. Jagath is even arrested of murder charges. When all the problems get resolved, many changes had taken place in their lives.


'Samartha' new tele on Sirasa TV
"Samartha", a miniplay woven around a girl who starts a mission to uncover the mysterious murder of her sister is telecast every Monday at 8.25 pm on Sirasa TV.

The main cast in 'Samartha' includes Angela Seneviratne, Cyril Dharmawardena, Sanath Wimalaweera, Nayana Kumari Mahendra Perera, Vishaka Siriwardena, Gayana Sudarshani and Nirdha Uyanhewa.

Pretty Samartha, the protagonist is an orphan who is brought up by her grandmother. Her elder sister Nipuni and she had been abandoned by their mother once the father died whilst they were very young.

Nipuni, the elder sister, who was working in a restaurant in the hill-country suddenly disappears and Samartha goes in search of her elder sister to the restaurant where she worked.

Having gone through a number of obstacles she finds out that her elder sister has been killed. She also comes to know that the owner of the restaurant where her murdered sister worked, Frank is an illicit drug dealer.

She finds out her sister has been murdered by Frank's thugs after he had come to know about the identity of Nipuni. Frank becomes suspicious about Samartha's behaviour and sacks her from her job.

At this time Samartha has fallen in love with Ananda, a singer who plays in the restaurant at night.

Meanwhile Samartha who continues with her objective finds out that Frank's wife, Rosy has a relationship in her life. She begins to unravel this relationship.

At this stage Frank's main rival is the Balawardena, a politician in the area. Frank has already become a target of a group of thugs hired by Balawardena.

Will Frank become their victim? Would Samartha be able to overcome her mission?

All these and many other queries will be solved at the end.

'Aladdin &The Magic Lamp' at Russian Centre
The ever popular children's film 'Aladdin & The Magic Lamp' will be screened at the Russian Centre in Colombo on the April 26 at 6.00 pm.

This English movie is directed by Boris Ritserev. Bons Brestrorv, Dodo Vhogovadze, Sarry Karrie, Andreyi Fait, Otar Koberidze and Ekakrina, Verulashivili star in 'Aladdin & The Magic Lamp'.
