Junk clearing in ColomboThe Colombo
Municipal Council will launch a massive one-day junk-clearing program on Sunday, October 12 enabling those residing in the city to get rid of their garbage.

CMC's Director of Solid Waste Management Division Lalith Wickremaratne told The Sunday Times that people in the City of Colombo will have the opportunity to handover their garbage to CMC vehicles which will be deployed all over the city throughout the day.

Mr. Wickremaratne said that any type of waste including furniture, broken equipment and garden refuse such as tins and buckets would be collected by the CMC vehicles free of charge.

"The main objective of the program is to create an environment free from mosquitoes and other pests because with the current rains the threat of the mosquito menace is imminent unless the surroundings are cleaned", he said. Mr. Wickremaratne said that on this day about 40 tractors will be deployed for garbage collection from homes and would be supported by Colombo based private cleaning companies.

Residents could call the Solid Waste Management Division on telephone numbers 2691222 and 2693045 or on fax number 2674314 for inquiries.
