Of love, sacrifice and mystery
By Susitha R. Fernando

Paboda and Channa in a scene from ‘ Wassane Hiru Evidin’

Popular actor Channa Perera is the producer-director of ‘Wassane Hiru Evidin’ (Sun in the Rainy season) a teleplay woven around love, sacrifice and mysteries in a bungalow. The cast includes many talented young stars.

The plot around which the drama revolves is very subtle and shows the clash of wills between a group of young people and their parents. The dreams of the two groups differ from each other.

Isuru (Channa Perera) and Melani (Paboda Sandeepani) are children of wealthy Sam Gajanayake (Robin Fernando) and Shanthini Gajanayaake (Radha de Mel). Sam is a director of a Group of Companies.

Isuru is engaged to Kawya (Kanchana Mendis) daughter of Victor Wijewardana (Sathischandra Edirisinghe) and Irene (Nilanthi Wijesinghe), a prosperous business family. Both parties favour this marriage. Even though Isuru is a director and heir to his father’s business he is more interested in a social life being the leader of a music group. His sister Melani is in love with Kavinda (Harsha Bulathsinhala) an army officer. Gajanayake and his wife are sad and angry that their children are going against their wishes.

One night on the way back home from a musical show in Nuwara Eliya, Isuru and his group meets with an accident. The accident seriously injures a poor flower seller Sewwandy (Ama Wijesekara). Isuru and his group are compelled, on orders from the Police, to remain in Nuwara Eliya till an inquiry in to the accident was over.

As they are forced to stay in Nuwara Eliya, Isuru takes his friends to the bungalow belonging to his father. Despite the strong objections of the bungalow caretaker who had been instructed not to allow anyone in to the bungalow, Isuru occupies the house with his friends. Hearing this Gajanayake parents get worried and sent a family friend Roy (Buddhe Wickrema) to attend to the mishap and release Isuru and bring them back to Colombo as soon as possible. Their main fear was that if Isuru remains in the bungalow he might find out the secrets haunting the bungalow.

Meantime Kawya falls ill and is admitted to hospital for a serious womb operation and at the end of the operation it was revealed that Kawya is unable to have children. Knowing how much Isuru loves to have a large family she decides to give up her marriage to Isuru.

Without knowing what has happened Isuru from Nuwara Eliya tries in vain to contact Kawya. Unable to contact her he finally sends his best friend Krishantha (Roshan Pilapitiya) to find out what has happened. Broken hearted Kawya discloses everything to Krishantha and gets him to promise to keep the whole thing a secret.

What are the mysteries in the Gajanayake bungalow? What happens to Kawya? These and many other questions would be answered at the end. In the technical crew are scriptwriter a Pushpakumara Ellawala, art director Marnie Mendis, editor Dhammika Priyalal and the camera is handled by Norbert Ratnasiri.

Music director for “Wassane Hiru Evidin” is by Harsha Bulathsinghala.
