Mudalali’s paddy. Having seen a beautiful lake he forgets
the purpose of his visit and gets ready for a bath. There he meets
Bandara whom he later invites to be his assistant on the lorry.
                Basil’
s mother had sold a property and bought this lorry for him. Thus
he became popular in the village as a lorry owner and driver. But
Basil didn’t like to be a driver at all. Bandara is completely
different to Basil. He hates to be a farmer and was dreaming to
own a garage in his village. Basil’s old shabby lorry is precious
              to him. But
Bandara’s mother doesn’t like her son’s new job
in the lorry. She wants him to be a farmer and work in the paddy
field. But Bandara is pleading her to allow him to do the job he
likes. In-spite of her dislike, she agrees to this. Bandara enjoys
working in the lorry even though Basil gets all the hard work done
              by him. Meanwhile
a schoolmaster Pabilis comes in search of Basil. The stranger is
none other but Basil’s former intended father-in-law. He comes
because his daughter, Matilda who is adamant and refuses marry to
any other but Basil. Basil left his own village because Pabilis’
s family was against their marriage and they had regular quarrels
too. Arrogant Matilda’s parents’ who strongly objected
to their affair looked down on Basil. One
day Basil meets Ranganath and Kamala. This meeting gives new hopes
to Basil’s life. Seeing Kamala Basil develops an attraction
towards her. This is because Kamala resembles Matilda. He begins
to frequently visit the library where Kamala works. Ranganath
and Dhanapala Mudalali who become aware of the development raise
objections. This situation gradually gets worse and Basil finds
himself chased away from the village. Dhanapala Mudalali has ulterior
motives in sending Basil away from the village. He knew Basil is
a threat to his business. One
night Basil along with his friend Bandara returns to the village.
