              Walawwa show delayed
  Veteran
film maker Lester James Peries’ latest film ‘Wekande
Walawwa’ (Mansion By the Lake) release would be delayed due
to the April 2 Parliament election. The
film was scheduled to be released on February 12 but in view of
the uncertainties arising out of the dissolution of parliament and
forthcoming election, the film distributors had decided to release
the film once the political situation returns to normal. Speaking
about the postponement veteran filmmaker, Lester James Peries said
that a similar situation arose when his film ‘Beddegama’
(Village in the Jungle) was released. Here too electioneering prevented
people from late shows. “There would be a less tendency for
people to go out for a serious movie like this”, he said. He
said it also would affect with the publicity campaign especially
with the poster campaign, as the walls would be covered with posters
of election candidates. The film which won international acclaims
at several foreign festivals was the first local production that
competed in the Foreign Film category at last year Academy Awards.
                Based
on Anton Chekov’s ‘Cherry Orchard’ the script
was written by Somaweera Senanayake and the stellar cast in “Wekande
Walawwe” include Malani Fonseka, Wasanthi Chathurani, Irangani
Serasinghe, Sanath Gunathilake, Ravindra Randeniya and Paboda Sandeepani. Cinematography
is handled by K. A. Dharmasena while Gladwin Fernando did the editing
and Sumitra Peries and Mani Mendis did the art direction. Pradeep
Ratnayake did the musical score. The film is produced by Chandran
Ratnam and would be released in the CEL circuit. |
