The 41st encounter between Thurstan College and
Isipathana MV which is being played for the Blacham Wijewardena
Memorial Trophy got underway at the SSC Grounds yesterday.
Isipathana
won the toss and invited Thurstan to bat. The Thurstanites batted
for 75.1 overs to score 180.
It
was negative cricket all the way by Thurstan where they went onthe
defensive and lost most of their wickets.
At
one stage, they were sitting pretty at 64 for 1, before a semi collapse,
they lost two wickets before lunch. The Thurstan batsmen were not
allowed to settle down due to some accurate bowling by Waduge and
Wickremaratne, who destroyed the middle order by taking five wickete
between them.
There
was only one big partnership in the Thurstan innings between Perera
and skipper Maharachchi for the fifth wicket, they scored 50. Skipper
Maharachchi who scored half a century last week, ran himself out
at 49.
Isipathana
were sitting pretty at the close of play on day one. Their most
promising player Dilruksha scored an unbeaten 150 which is the highest
in the series. He was in fine form,before he was out for 23.
The
match will be continued today. Thurstan are leading the series with
five to the Isipathanians four victories.
