Suwanda Padma focuses on our past
‘Suwanda Padma’ deals with a series of incidents which occur when attempting to re-build a degenerated society into a society rich in traditional, cultural and moral values.

The reason for the fall in values is attributed to the breakdown of human relationships due to isolation from the traditional society, corruption owing to weak administration and the alienation of temple and village.

The teledrama unfolds on the small screen in an artistically captivating manner. Irugal Bandara and Amarasinghe are high-ranking officials in the administrative service. Irugal Bandara’s son Arjuna and Amarasinghe’s son Vajira having studied in Australia are employed there. A love affair blossoms between Vindya, Irugal Bandara’s daughter who is studying in Australia and Vajira.

However there is conflict between the families of Irugal Bandara and Amarasinghe when a malpractice in administration comes to light. Returning to Sri Lanka unaware of this situation the affair between Vindya and Vajira cracks up.

Mrs. Amarasinghe intends to arrange a marriage between her son and her brother’s daughter Nadika. Vindya becomes mentally depressed and falls sick.

Meanwhile Irugal Bandara who is disillusioned with government service returns to his wife’s village and settles down in her property. Vindya undergoes native treatment. Amarasinghe too gets a transfer to the village.

On returning to the village Irugal Bandara opens a free school not only for education but also to teach local singing and dancing. He reunites the temple and village by staging old folk dances, plays, etc, thus hoping to arrest the deteriorating trend in moral values.

Naiabe, a thug with considerable clout with the politicians of the area tries to disrupt these activities but fails owing to the now highly disciplined society. The children who attend Irugal Bandara’s school recognises and emulates true traditional values and the parents are helpless before them.

What is Vindya’s future? Will she recover? Will the Amarasinghe’s and Bandara’s make up and be friends again? Will Nadika marry her cousin? This teledrama which attempts to evaluate the cultural traditional values will be telecast on Rupavahini channel at 8.45 prime time.
