By Susitha R. Fernando
Sonia Dissa is to be felicited for her
forty years in cinema with a fitting celebration at the BMICH at
7.00 pm on June 7 (Tuesday). The event titled ‘Mata Asai Hinahenna’
(I Love to Laugh) which also marks Sonia Dissa’s sixtieth
birthday is organised by the film artistes and colleagues.
This
actress and producer was introduced to the cinema by Anthony C.
Perera, Sonia Dissa nee Mary Felicia Perera, first acted in “Chandiya”
in 1965. Titus Totawatte was its director. It was Tissa Abeysekara
who first called her Sonia Disa, which name had clung on to her
this far.
“I
had never been to a film when I first acted” Sonia the eldest
in a family of four siblings said recalling her past. “It
was my friends who persuaded me to become an actress,” said
Sonia though her mother opposed the idea. One day Sonia along with
a friend went to the location of Chandiya and made her first appearance
before a camera. Since then she had acted in nearly hundred films
including some very popular films, “Soorayangeth Sooraya”,
“Thusara”, “Sadahatama Oba Magai” and “Janaka
Saha Manju”. Sonia won the Sarasavi Film Festival Best Supporting
Actress award for her role in “Obata Divura Kiyannam”
and for her role in “Devduwa” won the Presidential award
for the Best Supporting actress.
Sonia
having acted in most of K. A. W. Perera’s films said, “Many
a time I have acted vamp roles and for some reason or other majority
of my fans have been boys”.
Pursuing
film production with “Jaya Apatai” a box office hit
she went onto make more than ten films. Having being involved in
doing commercial films all her life Sonia now wants to produce a
good artistic film.
“Unlike
during our time present day actors and actresses are quite talented
and they also have got better prospects”, Sonia said. Commenting
on audience response Sonia said viewers were quite intelligent today
unlike then.
Sonia
today acts grandmother roles being occupied with her grandchildren
at her residence in Dehiwela. Speaking about the felicitation she
said; I was quite surprised the way my colleagues have come together
for this occasion voluntarily and I am grateful to all of them”.
