‘Uththamavi’:
Travails of a village damsel

‘Uththamavi’ unfolds the distressing
misfortunes of village life telecast every Wednesday at 8.30 pm
on Rupavahini Channel. The cast of ‘Uththamavi’ includes
Vasanthi Chathurani, Suminda Sirisena, Nilmini Tennakoon, Rangana
Premaratne, Niel Alles, Mahendra Perera, Gayani Gisanthika, Rukmal
Nirosh, Sumith Ratnayaka, Samanthi Lanerole and Niroshan Illeperuma.
The
script is by Somawira Senanayake and Thusitha de Silva is the director.
Ramyalatha was a village woman who did various jobs to eke out a
living. She canoed alone for fishing, sometimes worked in a stone
quarry, and sometimes hawked goods. Her husband was a chena cultivator.
On and often wild elephants disturbed their way of life. Her daughter
is dumb. Her brother, Anuradha, is a young unemployed graduate.
Anuradha commences a herbal medicine packeting business and gradually.
improves
himself. He is involved in a love affair with Nelum the daughter
of Nelson Mudalali of the village who lives by vile means. Nelum
is a young girl whose behaviour is completely opposite to her father’s,
Nelson is opposed to Anuradha’s affair with his daughter Nelum.
He has threatened Anuradha many a time. Nelson Mudalali is making
arrangements to give Nelum in marriage to a young crookish businessman
named Manilal who has political connections.
In
the meantime Ramyalatha’s husband becomes the victim of an
attack by a wild elephant. Ramyalatha’s dumb daughter becomes
pregnant by a worthless young man. With these tragic experiences
their lives were confronted with many trials and tribulations.
Premasiri
Khemadasa did the music while Chinthaka Somakirthi handled the Camera.
Asoka Athaudahetti was the assistant director, Sanjaya Nipuna Arachchi
did make up, Chandana Nishantha (Lucki) was the art director while
the Production manager was W. Ravindra. The executive producer was
Mrs. Kamini Rajapakse. |
