‘Kande Handiya’ , woven around day-to-day happenings in a particular area of the village and the life patterns of people there, is the newest teleplay that is telecast every Sunday at 7.00 pm. on Swarnavahini.

Set in a semi-suburban background in Kandegama, ‘Kande handiya’ is woven around a few permanent characters and places in the place called Kande Handiya. Elwatura Mudalali’s grocery is the main place here which is surrounded by a few groceries including a bicycle shop, a barbershop, a race bookie and a mini fair.

‘Irangani’ is the name given to Elwatura Mudalali’s grocery and it is a multi purpose shop able to meet everybody’s needs. This is the name of Mudalali’s middle aged wife. Although they had been married for a longtime and were childless, they adopted a child and called her Devika. Later the couple got a son and Irangani starts ill-treating Devika where as Mudalali’s affection for her didn’t change.

Their son is boarded in the city and is attending school there. Malakaruna takes a leading role in any event concerning Kande Handiya. At times he is quite humble and at times he is aggressive. The bicycle shop is his niche in the world. The people of Kande Handiya respect Malakaruna and treats him as the first man in the area. Surya with a disability in his left leg is the jack of all trades at Kande Handiya.

One day Malakaruna meets Sirimal coming from village and finds him a job at Irangani Kade. While working there Sirimal starts an affair with Devika. Sirimal who is apparently quite harmless is a drunkard. The drama shows the consequences of alcohol abuse and its effect on love and society.
