‘Apuru Sahodaraya’: Tale out of the ordinary

‘Apuru Sahodaraya’ is a teleplay about a brother, who battles to prevent unnecessary troubles in the family when tragedy occurs. He is traumatized by these events. The teledrama is telecast every Monday at 7.00pm on Swarnavahini starting October 18.

Sirisena Jayawardena (Edward Gunawardena) is a rich planter. His wife Emylin Jayawardena (Avanthi Aponsu) is a loving wife and a good mother. Rohan (Palitha Silva) Saliya (Ravindra Yasas) and Tamara (Anuradha Udayangani) are their children. Bandu is their servant. He is dumb. When Saliya applies for a job he meets with his father’s disapproval. Saliya makes a journey by train to attend his interview. Saliya’s train meets with an accident and this news frightens the Jayawardena family. When Rohan goes to the hospital he is shocked to find his brother, Saliya dead. His father Sirisena is a heart patient. Rohan is worried how he could break the news. Sirisena is hospitalised as the news of Saliya is delayed. Rohan decides to lie to his family saying that Saliya is OK and will come home anytime now.

On the way he meets a person who is completely identical to Saliya. Kuruppu (Ravindra Yasas) who resembles dead Saliya is an underworld character and an ex-convict who involved in a number of murders and robberies. Rohan after some thought decides to employ Kuruppu with certain strict rules and regulations to impersonate Saliya. Kuruppu thinks that he had hit the jackpot and agrees. After a period of training Rohan takes him home.

Kuruppu threatens Rohan and blackmail him seizing the full income from the estate belonging to Saliya and Kuruppu. Bandu gets to know this while Kuruppu gambles and spends his fortune with Kelly (Damitha Abeyratne) and lavishes money on her family. Kuruppu now had three affairs and finally marries a girl from a respectable (Ruwanthi Mangala) family.

Meanwhile Rohan loses his job and his girl friend (Achala Rohini). Kuruppu now has full control over the family affairs and this makes Rohan a mental case. When Rohan declares this is not Saliya but that it is a look-alike no one believes him as they think he is mentally deranged.

Meanwhile Kuruppu’s boss, the underworld leader and his gang goes in search of Kuruppu who had disappeared from the group. They abduct Kuruppu asking a ransom of Rs. Five million from Sirisena. What is Kuruppu’s future?
