Behind the times
When the Sri Lankan held hostage in Iraq for nearly two months Dinesh Rajaratnam arrived at the Katunayake airport, UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardena was on his way out of the country. Seeing Mr. Rajaratnam, the UNP politico made a hasty u-turn, came to greet him, and went on to tell the newly released hostage how he had contacted the Red Cross in Iraq to plead for Mr. Rajaratnam's release. Maybe what Dr. Jayawardena does not know is that the Red Cross no longer operates in Iraq and pulled out several months ago.

The stink of battle
The battle at the state-run Rupavahini Corporation is continuing. This time a section of the employees infuriated by the fact that they have been denied their annual bonus this year have vented their anger in a rather 'stinking' manner. Unknown to anyone, a still to be identified person had, one night last week, plastered the door leading to the office of the Director General of the Corporation with human waste.

The unpleasant and smelly sight greeted the DG upon his arrival and the cleaning services were immediately summoned to disinfect and deodorise the area. Now an inquiry is underway to find the culprits who caused this big stink.

'Positive thinking' acceptable
In October, the employees of Parliament attended a seminar on "positive thinking." One employee asked a hypothetical question about how subordinates should handle a boss who comes to work late, intoxicated at times, and still manages to get his promotion but another officer objected to the question being raised and once the seminar was over the officer who raised the question was asked for his explanation for alleged "misbehaviour" and "embarrassing the senior management of Parliament."

The matter has now been settled. The Secretary General of Parliament has ruled that this is a "baseless allegation" and that the exchange of views at seminars is perfectly acceptable.

Forcible extraction
A soldier has ended up at the Army Hosptial with a peculiar complaint - a tooth being forcibly extracted without any anaesthesia. Insiders allege an angry dentist berated the soldier over a personal issue and then carried out the controversial extraction. The soldier’s colleagues have brought the matter to the attention of their superiors.

A non-invitation
Our Number One Loser's misfortunes continue. A hoax invitation to a dinner backfired when the so-called host-to-be and several invitees met at a party before the non-event. The invite was mis-spelt - something "Shy Pat" would never have got wrong! No wonder a report is needed to establish in-house sponsoring of the Tempting Event!
