Vasantha
Obeysekere an unmatched film director

After graduating from the University of Ceylon in
1962, Vasantha Obeysekere started his career as a journalist serving
on the Editorial Staff of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited
(1964-1970). There, in addition to his editorial responsibilities,
he wrote short stories as well.
However
his prime interest was in filmmaking, and he was associated as a
co-screenplay writer and assistant director of the film “Sath
Samudura” (Seven seas), which was Sri Lanka’s official
entry for the Moscow International Film Festival in 1967. In 1971
he obtained a Certificate in Cinematography from ‘Conservatories
Independent Du Cinema Francais’ Paris.
In
1970, he started his career as a film director with the film “Wesgaththo”
(Masked Men) and since then he has become an emblematic and outstanding
filmmaker in Sri Lanka.
‘Sewvandi’ joins Vasantha and Sangeetha
Speaking to Vasantha Obeysekera, TV Times found that he was waiting
for the release of “Sewvandi”(The Rose) this year.
This will be Sangeetha Weeraratne, the talented and popular actress’s
maiden venture as producer.
Scripted
by Vasantha Obeysekere, the story revolves around a detective and
his capacity for investigation. A police officer who goes on holiday
with his family sees a woman who seems quite familiar to him. The
question of her identity begins to obsess him. Going through the
files he subsequently discovers that this particular woman has been
the victim in a gruesome murder. The plot unfolds on two levels
depicting the officer and his investigation and the background of
the victim and what led to her murder.
The
cast consists of professionals Sangeetha Weeratne, Ravindra Randeniya,
Chandani Seneviratne and amateurs such as photographer turned singer
Dayan Vitharana. Musical score by Rohana Weerasinghe and the film
is edited by Ravindra Guruge. Sewvandi is filmed by Jayanath Gunawardena.
