‘Asani Warsha’ stuck in the queue
Vasantaha Obeysekere’s earlier film Asani Warsha (Wrath and Rain) which was made a few years ago is still on the EAP circuit cue. The film deals with a conflict ridden father-son relationship. Trapped in a social net of class divisions, poverty and discrimination, it is the odyssey of a young son’s search for parental love and a reflection of the larger tragedy of alienated Sri Lankan youth.

A cast with some of the talented youngsters in today’s cinema include Jagath Chamil, Kamal Addaraarachchi, Meena Kumari, Sanath Gunathilaka, Veena Jayakody, Mahendra Perera, Semini Iddamalgoda and Janaki Wijeratne.

The technical crew
Director of photography - Jayantha Gunawardhana, editor - Ravindra Guruge, music director - Premasiri Khemadasa, Art director - Lal Harindranath and make-up - Imal Shanaka Peiris.

The production executive is Nihal Sanjaya while the assistant director is Wimal Deshapriya. Story, script and direction by Vasantha Obeysekere Asani Warsha is produced by Soma Edirisinghe of EAP Films.

Speaking of the films that have waited long for the release, Vasantha is incensed at the wastage of both money and talent used to make artistic films that are kept awaiting while third rate Bollywood films gets priority. He thinks that this type audience exposure will undermine the audience’s ability to appreciate artistic films of outstanding quality.

The National Film Corporation (NFC) has to be blamed as it allots funds to film makers indiscriminately and most of these funds are used to make commercial films.‘This type of stepmotherly treatment may be the cause of the decline of artistic films in the Sri Lankan cinema’ said Mr. Obeysekera unhapply.
