Tissa Jayasinghe captures Celltel Classic in cavalier style
Much credit to Duminda Ratnayake the Chief Executive of Celltel GSM for a superbly organized and excellently presented encounter at the Ridgeways of the Royal Colombo. Much praise to Anijith Singh too.

Cavalier Tissa
Tissa Jayasinghe in cavalier style pounced on the Celltel Classic to win comfortably with nett 67. Off the tee Tissa hits a helluva long and accurate ball and when he gets round the greens his recently gained accuracy gives him a chip and a putt. He recorded 28 putts through the round and much deserves the massive applause he picked up at the award ceremony.

David Evans messed up the 14th with 8 strokes to surrender 2nd place to C. Amerasinghe who was quite impressive on nett 70. Doc.C joined bringing up the rear or at the bottom of the ladder Nirmal Hettiarachchy who just recently struck the magical Hole-in-One. Thurairaja was in a messy collection of rough shots.

'B' Division
M.H. Lee and Sarath Piyaratne settled for a tie on 69. Piyaratne who was moving well quite suddenly lost his cool to go negligent and pay the price beaten by Lee whose rear nine was better. Confetti was available in abundance with Lalith Ramanayake, Rohan Fernando, Sarath Sirisena and Anoup Kundanmal contributing substantially. S.A.W. Manawadu, Lalinda Dharmadasa and S. Subramaniam cracked pond riddled centuries.

'C' Division
Gangling Roshan J. Perera was in tremendous form from his first tee shot. Calm, collected and accurate he protected his strokes to move to 89 and win recognition for not only taking the 'C' Division trophy but also registering the lowest score for the day nett 64. Thrilled with his first time victory the man was beaming all night willing to give a shot by shot commentary to anyone willing to listen. Lester Weinman a huge hitter off the tee struck good form too. He was calculating and surrendering flamboyancy for steady play he came up with an excellent nett 65 just one stroke behind Perera. Mohan Selvaratnam was the first to flash a century and a few others who joined the mess were Lal de Mel, Ken de Alwis, Lucian Ratnayake and Rohith Fonseka. The confetti production was loaded with S. Weeraratne, Rahula Seneviratne & A. Jawadh contributing lavishly.

Masters
That man again Lester Weinman continued his streak of success when his nett 65 won him the Masters Division beating another steady and calculated striker Majeed Awn by just one stroke. Kumarasinghe Boralessa helped Weinman to celebrate joyfully.

Seniors
Joe Perera came good in the Seniors with a great nett 66. Norman Gunawardena has been striking the ball consistently well these last few weeks and I have been hearing his shot by shot description of play on Sundays over fine wine. He was cruising to victory when one ugly shot crept into his stock and with that went all chances of a happy ending.

Gymkhana Events
Dilip Kodikara was absolutely stunning with a delightful streak of 312 yards off the 8th tee box. It was a great shot worthy of a Celltel Trophy. In the nearest to the pin contest off the 9th tee H.K. Kwak was massively aided by the omnipotent. Then a shot that was straying came back magically to settle 5 feet. from the pin. Aniljith Singh, Director of Celltel, amply rewarded him.

The Award ceremony was slick, Boralessa was crisp & Duminda Ratnayake and Anijith appeared pleased with the whole world over the success of their tournament. Celltel GSM did themselves proud.
