Seevali Ratnapura poised to take boxing Trophy

Seevali Central Ratnapura, one of the hottest favourites in local boxing, seemed well on course to annex the L.V. Jayaweera Memorial Trophy at the meet conducted by the Central Province Boxing Association and held at the specially erected ring at the Police Ground, Kandy.

The Seevali lads who had six finalists had a hundred per cent record (winning four out of four) at the time of going to press. Maduranga and Fernando battered their opponents from Dharmaraja and Narandeniya into submission, forcing the referee to step in and cry halt as early as round two and one.

Hard hitting dominated the three day proceedings and technique and science was not all that evident. Among the shining lights was Ahamed of Trinity who showed skill, technique and poise. He should be in line for the Best Boxer's Trophy.

Fernando of Mahanama Kandy did well to outpoint his opponent Selvam in a close scrap. Asanka Boyagoda of Vidyartha enlivened proceedings with a neat display in the first bout of the evening.
The finals got underway only at 6 p.m.

Light Fly Weight 'A' (33-35 Kgs): A.G.M. Gunaratne (Kadugannawa MV) beat H.M. Herath (Vidyartha).

Fly Weight 'A' (35-37 Kgs): D.P.S. Fernando (Mahanama Kandy) beat S.K.M. Selvam (Royal Colombo).
BantamWeight 'A' (37-39 Kgs): H.L.M.Pieris (Taxila) beat K.M.R. Sanjeewa (Sangabodhi).

Feather Weight 'A' (39-41 Kgs): M.H.B.Gunatilleke (Seevali) beat M.R. Madushanka (Saliya MS).
Light Weight 'A' (41-43 Kgs): R.M. Wijesinghe (Sri Palee) beat E.M.A. Ekanayake (Dharmaraja).

Light Welter Weight 'A' (43-45 Kgs): M.H.L.Maduranga (Seevali) beat H.M.Hettiarachchi (Dharmaraja) RSC Rd 2.
Fly Weight 'B' (46-48 Kgs): P.M. Fernando (Seevali) beat V.A. Prabashwaran (Narandeniya) RSC Rd 1.

Bantam Weight 'B' (48-40 Kgs): K.M. Gamage (Seevali) beat K.M.S. Dahanayake (St. Sylvester's).
