Action Plan to push for people’s rights
By Mahangu Weerasinghe
The UNP is to put together a petition as a part of its multi-faceted Action Plan to build on the foundation of the recently concluded Jana Bala Meheyuma, party sources said.

They said the petition will demand that the people’s rights be protected and that the Presidential Election be held in 2005. Plans have been made to send the petition to all parts of the island to be signed by the people.

The Action Plan will commence following a three-day meeting of the party’s political sub offices. These gatherings, where the steps that would be taken thereafter would be outlined, would be held island wide from July 29 t0 31.A two-week awareness programme is also to be held parallel with the drive for signatures. This programme will include a party membership drive as well as a review of potential voters and their views. It will include the mobilization of trade unions and civil society.

The sources said the UNP also plans to push for a proposal to force a Presidential election this year. The party leadership has instructed all Provincial Council members to strongly support this proposal and to convene a special Provincial Council meeting in mid-August to this end.

An island wide propaganda campaign has also been organized to commence on August 4 under the direction of UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. The campaign is to commence at Dambulla and thereafter proceed to Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Hatton, Badulla and Eheliyagoda. This phase will draw to a close on August 26 after which there will be a concentrated effort on the Hambantota District, where party representatives are scheduled to go from house to house August 29 and 30.

The UNP has decided to hold at least twenty-five propaganda meetings in each electoral division during this period, the sources said. A gathering of youth numbering close to 10,000 is to be held as another part of the UNP’s Action Plan. The youth meeting is to be held on August 28 at the Henry Pedris Stadium in Havelock Town and is to be attended by Mr. Wickremesinghe.
