‘Wet
and Dry’: An emotional tale
Just like the environment, feelings in human hearts too are subject
to changes. At times they are wet and again they become dry.
"Theth Saha Wiali" (Wet and Dry) is one such story that
deals with the changes of human feelings.
The
drama, a character analysis revolves around different incidents
and situations that take place within four days in the lives of
a protagonist, a street singer who undergoes both mental and physical
struggle to rescue his dying daughter.
Directed
by Lalith Ratnayake, Theth Saha Wiyali will be telecast on the Rupavahini
belt at primetime every Saturday at 8.35 pm. Suminda Sirisena, Chandani
Seneviratne, Nihal Fernando, Suneetha Wimalaweera, Edward Gunawardena,
G. Perera, Dimuthu Chinthaka, Jagatha Chanila, W. Jayasiri, Sarath
Chandrasiri, Janak Premasiri, Anton Jude, Udeni Alwis and Liyoni
Kotalawela lead the cast.
The
central character in Theth Saha Wiyali is Steven a father of a fifteen
year old daughter. Dwelling in a housing scheme he ekes out a living
by singing in the streets with Sudu Malli who has been living in
his house for a long time.
Steven's daughter is a heart patient and the doctors treating her
inform that she has to undergo a transplant operation on which her
life depends and this would cost a massive amount-nearly Rs 200,000.
Without a proper source of income and living in a rented house Steven
makes many futile attempts to find the requred sum.
Finally
he stops at Rogus' who runs a brothel and lends money on high interests.
Rogus makes a demand that he will give money in return for a young
girl for his brothel. Even though he is desperate and searching
for a way to collect some money, Steven refuses this proposal. Thinking
of a way to collect money he comes across a mother and a daughter
who had come to the town from a rural area. The two meet with an
accident and the mother dies on the spot and Steven takes Amalie,
the daughter to Rogus.
With
the money he gets for the young girl he rushes to the hospital to
rescue his own daughter. To his dismay he only sees his daughter
taken in a trolley to the mortuary. Disheartened with what he had
done Steven runs back to Rogus to rescue Amalie. The whole night
he fights off the men coming for the young girl. Finally in an attempt
to rescue Amalie from the drunken brothel owner Rogus, Steven kills
him.
Hiding
from police arrest and evading his own daughter's funeral Steven
searches a way to take Amalie to her village and find a way to return
her to her father.
This
journey involves them in many new experiences in life. Wasantha
Vittacchi-the make up artiste, Manjula Ayagama-the art director,
Priyantha Guruge-editor and Prabath Roshan directed the camera.
Premasiri Khemadasa wrote the musical score. To the lyrics written
by D. Jayasiri, Bandula Nanayakkarawasam and Ajantha Ranasinghe
the playback singing is by T. M. Jayaratne, Samantha Perera, Amarasiri
Peiris and Indika Upamali.
