‘Thalaya
Soyana Geethaya’ is woven around Aruna, the only son of Sirimewan
and Sunethra, wealthy upper-class parents. Studying music in India,
Aruna suddenly returns to Sri Lanka. This was to find Poornima,
his girlfriend whom he met while he was in India. Poornima returns
to Sri Lankan following her father's death. With her father's death,
Poornima and her mother become destitute as her uncle (father's
brother) forces them to leave their home. The miserable mother and
the daughter leave and nobody is aware where they had gone. Aruna's
return was to find them but he fails in all his attempts to find
Poornima's whereabouts.
Down
and depressed there is only one way that Aruna can soothe his troubled
heart, listening to Sepali's singing. Sepali is the domestic aide,
who is blessed with a beautiful voice. Aruna who gets attracted
to Sepali's voice soon gets attracted to the young maiden as well.
Punyasiri the driver in the mansion too has an idea about Sepali.
Nishani,
Aruna's elder sister who studied in the town now works as a beautician.
She has an affair with a rich businessman Nalin, who lives with
his ailing father. This affair results in Nishani becoming pregnant
and he promises to marry her. But Nalin's father's condition becomes
critical and the marriage does not take place as they expected.
Meanwhile Maduri, wife of Nalin's business partner Pradeep, has
an interest in Nalin. When his father gets ill she gets close to
him and this was with an ulterior motive.
Meanwhile
at Aruna's home, Sunethra, Aruna's mother suspects the booming relationship
between her son and the maid Sepali. Intending to put a stop to
this she arranges a marriage to Aruna from a wealthy family. At
this point Aruna receives some information about Poornima and her
mother. Having no one to help, the two were undergoing a difficult
time. Aruna comes forward to help them but this not with the same
spirit he had earlier. His interest is more on Sepali than on his
old love.
In
the meantime the relationship between Nalin and Madhuri develops
and Nalin leaves the country with her. Nishani who gives birth to
Nalin's child becomes helpless and she returns to her parents has
she as no other place to go. As Nishani returns home with a fatherless
child, Sunethra her mother makes a plan to hide the truth from the
villagers. She makes arrangements to settle Sepali and Punyasiri
in a house belonging to them and Nishani's child grows up with them.
Sepali becomes helpless and Aruna fails to go against his mother's
wishes. Disgruntled with everything Aruna leaves home.
Months
and years pass and one day Nalin returns to Sri Lanka and he starts
searching for his child. This was following his father direction
who had come to know about Nishani's sad plight because of his son.
He refuses to give any property belonging to him unless he finds
the child he had fathered. Will he be able to find the child? What
would be the future of Aruna? What happens to Sepali and Punyasiri?
