Stop police transfers during presidential race
Polls monitoring group PAFFREL has urged the Independent Police Commission to take immediate steps to stop all police transfers till the presidential election is held.

PAFFREL officials who met Police Commissioner Ranjith Abeysuriya brought to his notice the transfer of Thalawa and Thirupane OICs in spite of the commission’s directive ordering that all police transfers should be suspended during the election period.

“The commissioner was not aware of the two transfers which occurred last week in spite of his circular to the Police Department. We believe the IGP should take action to stop such transfers. We have also brought the issue to the notice of the Elections Commissioner who assured that steps would be taken to stop this,” PAFFREL chief Kingsley Rodrigo said.

He said such transfers did not augur well for the conduct of a free and fair election and were a dangerous sign as far as election violence was concerned.
The PAFREL chief also expressed concern over the expiry of the Police Commission’s term November 25 as it had to play an important role during the post-election period.
