Mystery boat with Italian DPL cover
The Customs Department has detained a consignment containing a boat said to be imported on behalf of the Italian embassy in Colombo and sought the Navy’s assistance to carry out further investigations, Chief Preventive Officer U. Sumathipala told The Sunday Times.

The consignment had arrived in an open container and the local agent had claimed that the boat had been imported on behalf of the Italian embassy in Colombo.

“We will be opening the container on Wednesday for further investigations to check the vessel for technical features of the boat,” Mr. Sumathipala said.
He said that during the initial investigations, the Italian embassy had claimed it had not imported the particular consignment, but further investigations are under way.

However, the local agent had produced a letter confirming that the boat had been imported on behalf of their client -– the Italian embassy.
