Ridgeway Kallapatha is the eldest son of Clifford Kallapatha-a proprietary planter. As a child and a youth he led a life of luxury being a member of the privileged class. But, as a father, he enters the evening of life, bereft of the glory of his childhood and youth. The lands and property he received as paternal inheritance he lost by pursuing pleasures and misusing that legacy. At one time his hobby was collecting vintage motor-cars. But now, what is left with Ridgeway is a ramshackle motor car that had no value. He uses that motorcar because he is compelled to keep it as he cannot afford a better one. But, the reason he gives for using it is that it has an antique value. Though he shows the outside world a contented life, inside, he regrets that the past glory is gone.

He is uncertain about his present. He does not even think of the future. That is also the attitude of his family of four children.

Outwardly they lead a happy-go-lucky life. But, inside their home, there are numerous problems and conflicts. Currently they live in a rented house. They have deposited their meager savings and go on living shifting from one rented house to another. These rented houses are comfortable high-class houses owners of which have mostly gone abroad. There are two reasons why Ridgeway likes this kind of rented house. One reason is that he can use those houses as his own property as the owners are not there. The second reason is that it is possible for him to pay the house rent by renting out rooms.

Ridgeway's wife and children are not opposed to this innocent strategy. It is as if his wife too has got attuned to his ways. Ridgeway's wife, Paba Kumari is a woman from the upcountry and she is not worried about the wealth and the property. While Ridgeway is satisfied with his minor savings she looks at the world through her husband's eyes.

Their daughter Chamathka, a charming and obedient girl carries on a minor business as a designer of bridal wear and she carries on an affair with Sader Suriyabandara. He is an artists and a photographer. Their affair is opposed by Chamathka;s parents for they think that he is not suitable to their status.

Her elder brother, Nilrel is in abroad while her elder sister Dahara is a journalist. Chamathka's younger brother Sithum does not care at all for the parents' advice. As a result Chamathka had to console her parents and shatter their dreams.
