Political Column
  Tightropes for birthday cake
  By Our Political Editor

It was a week that saw the international community seeking to avert a continued war and a return to the peace process.
5th Column
A time to recall the good old days of a humble beginning
  By Rypvanwinkle

My Dear Karu,
Situation Report
  All ears on Prabha's message
  By Iqbal Athas

With just a day to go for Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran's "Maveerar (Great Heroes) Day" address, the debate continued in the past many days among experts in State intelligence agencies - why have the Tiger guerrillas not staged dramatic attacks ahead of tomorrow's major event?
The Economic Analysis
The path to fiscal instability paved with good intentions
  By the Economist

It is difficult to fault the many good intentions of Budget 2007. Most intentions and objectives are in the correct direction, but their realisation is hardly likely. There are some bad plans as well that could be quite costly and do not reflect either the stringency of the fiscal situation or current national priorities. Some specific taxation measures are ill advised and unproductive.
Thoughts form London
Elephant fights, rock throwing and Radhika’s Albatross
  By Neville de Silva
When elephants fight it is the grass that gets trampled. It is a wise saw I picked up in my school days many, many decades ago.
Issue of the week
A damning Iraq report and nobody held responsible
  By Ameen Izzadeen
As the Iraqis are being slaughtered at a rate that even morgues cannot cope with, the political debate is centred on US withdrawal. Some say whatever excuses the Americans put forward for their unwillingness to withdraw and whatever consequences that may arise as a result of US withdrawal, the Americans must leave Iraq. But there are others who say the Americans must stay on because if they leave now the country would be plunged into a disaster.
Focus on Rights
Witnessing near medieval repression in the Maldives
  By Kishali Pinto Jayawardena
It would be easy to visit the Maldives as a tourist, a conference delegate or for business purposes and return with nary a thought of the almost medieval repression that rules every aspect of its civil and political life. Hundreds of deliberately or naturally incurious visitors flock to the islands every week, unknowing or uncaring of the desperation of liberal Maldivians to free their society from oppressive rule.

Budget debate: More politics than economics
The main opposition parties huffed and puffed for several days against the second Budget presented by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, but instead of bringing the House down they decided to vote for it on Wednesday for varying reasons.
