Proscribe Tigers, end CFA – PNM tells Govt.

The Patriotic National Movement (PNM) yesterday said that by taking immediate steps to proscribe the LTTE and officially ending the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) the Government could bring to an end the privileges that the LTTE was enjoying by remaining within the “peace process” while carrying on terrorist attacks.

In a statement issued by its Chairman Gunadasa Amarasekera, the PNM said that by such an action, the Government could also crackdown on traitors who were helping the Tigers as well as stop their dealings with the international community. They said that a decision should be taken without delay.

The statement said the previous Government had failed to ban the LTTE when former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar was killed and the present government had also failed to act when Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was attacked. “By failing to act when an attempt has been made on the life of the Defence Secretary, is the government going to wait for a more serious attack before taking these steps,” the PNM queried.
