AI campaign: Tigers want to bat — not to bowl

The LTTE is playing a double game or different ball game in relation to the controversial move by Amnesty International to launch cricket ball campaign on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

The LTTE’s human rights coordinator Selvi Navaruban told The Sunday Times the Tigers welcomed the AI’s move to highlight the human rights situation at the ongoing World Cup cricket venues in the Caribbean. The AI campaign is aimed at persuading the government and the LTTE to allow independent international observers to monitor the human rights situation in all parts of Sri Lanka, including LTTE-controlled areas.

However, the LTTE human rights coordinator was on the fence when asked whether international monitors would be allowed into rebel territory.

She said the LTTE leadership would have to take such a decision. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka government has been assured by the International Cricket Council that AI would not be allowed to carry out any campaign at venues of World Cup matches.
