JVP to file action against COPE wrongdoers
The JVP is planning to file action in the near future against the 'wrongdoers engaged in corruption' outlined in the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) report presented to Parliament at the beginning of 2007.
JVP officials told The Sunday Times FT that their party has been consistently speaking and highlighting to the public the corruption in public institutions spotlighted in COPE reports for a very long time.
Outspoken JVP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake is expected to lead the JVP in its action against the individuals and institutions named in the COPE report. Along with Mr. Dissanayake who is a COPE member, other JVP members on COPE are Piyasiri Wijenayake and Sunil Handunetti.
When asked about CMC legislator Vasudeva Nanayakkara's announcement this past week on his intentions to file charges against Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation (SLIC) on the grounds that the deal has hurt him as a member of the public, the JVP official said Mr. Nanayakkara has done this on a whim whereas the JVP has been publicly calling for action to be taken against corruption for quite a while.
