Army pugilists dominate

The conclusion of the second day’s proceedings of the Intermediate Men and Women Boxing Meet held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium saw the Army pugilists dominating. Of the 24 quarterfinals and eight semi final bouts that were concluded yesterday the Army pugilists came out on top.
In the quarter final bouts they came out victorious with eight of their boxers advancing to the semi finals while five of the boxers came out winners to qualify for the finals which will be held at the same venue from 5.00 p.m. onwards today.
The majority of the boxers emerged from Army in both the quarter and semi finals.
The Army boxers who made it to the final were S.A. Jayawardena who will oppose J. Soloman of Kingswood BC in the Super Heavyweight Over 91kgs, K.G.A.P. Jayasena in the Welterweight Under 69kgs who is billed to box M.N.D. Fernando of Nugegoda BC, Wasantha Kumara will meet his team mate I.R. Balasuriya in the Middleweight Under 75kgs and S.H.R. Kumara will oppose A.W.B. Malith of Kingswood BC in the Lightweight Under 81kgs.
Today the remaining semi finals are due to take place after which the final of both the men’s and women’s category will get underway. The chief guest for the final showdown will be SSP Rohan Abeywardena who is also the vice president of Amateur Boxing Association who is conducting this meet. |
