Tudawe wins Calcutta medal

Amal ‘Hi’ Tudawe weathered a messy South West Monsoon with an absolutely stunning score of nett 64 to capture the much coveted Calcutta medal donated to the Royal Colombo Golf Club in 1888 by the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, the oldest Royal Club outside the British Isles.

Most of the time through the straight and narrow Tudawe was almost dead accurate with his approach shots and on the green he was quite successful with a large dose of luck supporting him. He gave an interview soon after his round which will be highlighted in the Hi Magazine of July 2007.

Coming 2nd with a startling nett 66 was bright spark youngster Saakya Ukwatte, a delightful, tender stroke player. Still in the junior clinic, Ukwatte shows great promise and if his academic pursuits do not erode his passion for the game, we will soon have a classy young player at the Ridgeways.

Messing around
Ajantha Mylvaganam smashed his way through a water riddled hundred, the highest among the centurions, while Shirley de Silva, Amal Cabraal and Padmasiri Dias made pretty packs of confetti for the June brides.

2nd round
Nirmal Hettiarachchi was on 74 nett 66 closely followed by Gehan Siribaddana on 84 nett 68. Others who impressed were Jin Yong Kim nett 68, Manjula Chandrasoma 68, Bandula Weerasinghe 69, Zen Dharmaratne 69, Rochen Perera 69 and Avanka Herath 69.

Leaders
The gross score leaders over the 2 days play are :
Stewart Richie 73 & 72 - 145
Bandula Weerasinghe 76 & 75 - 151
Avinesh Nareshkumar 76 & 78 - 154

Glen Matthew cracked a boisterous double century with glee. Over this week-end, the contest will get keener with the Victoria Cup for the players returning the best nett aggregate over the 1st and 3rd rounds and then the best and most classy event will conclude for the Gold Medal for the player with the best gross score over 4 rounds. Stewart Richie is the piping hot favourite.
