Draft on LG polls conduct before House

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms is scheduled to discuss on Thursday the draft Act on electoral reforms for local government polls prepared by the Attorney General’s Department, prior to presenting it to Parliament.

The draft Act on the conduct of local government elections which will be on the mixed system of first-past-the-post and proportional representation received the consent of all political parties. The draft Act was prepared taking into account proposals submitted by the Elections Commissioner. Select Committee Chairman Minister Dinesh Gunewardena told The Sunday Times the Committee would discuss the electoral system proposed in the draft Act.

“As all parties agreed on the mixed system it is a matter of going through the draft. As for the election laws they mainly focus on the conduct of elections,” he said.
