D. R. Wijewardene Memorial Awards 2006
An assistant lecturer at the Sinhala Department of the Peradeniya University W. N. D. Wijesiri won the coveted D. R. Wijewardene Memorial Award 2006 for the best Sinhala novel in manuscript form with his script titled ‘Jana’. He also received a cash award of Rs. 100,000.
Mr. Wijesiri received the award from Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who was chief guest at the ceremony held at the BMICH this week.
Gunasekera Gunasoma was adjudged the First Runner-Up for his manuscript ‘Sankara’. He received the award and Rs. 40,000 from Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara. The Second Runner-Up was Somaratna Harasgama who received his award and Rs. 20,000 for his manuscript ‘Sanda Eliya Thawa Durai’ from Prof. Chandrasiri Palliyaguru.
There were two merit awards presented – Sanjeewa Gnanaratna and Sri Mala receiving certificates for their manuscripts titled ‘Indrachapa’ and ‘Ihirunu Kiri’.
The D.R. Wijewardene Memorial Awards are in their 23rd year. The awards are sponsored by Wijeya Newspapers Ltd, Lake House Printers and Publishers Limited and Stamford Lake (Pvt) Limited.
