P. B.’s remedy for our ills
Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera’s interview as reported on page 1 of The Sunday Times of August 5 could be summed up this way. The huge subsidy given by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) to the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) could be avoided if the electricity tariff could be raised at least to the level of what it would cost the CEB to produce a unit of electricity.
Then the 70,000 gas cylinder users and the six million mobile phone users that he refers to in the said interview, among others, ought not to mind paying the enhanced electricity tariff.
