Kandy dump hapless OZ
By Aubrey Kuruppu
Kandy SC won as they pleased in their opening skirmish in the Clifford Cup beating a hopelessly outclassed Old Zahirian team by 84 points (7 goals and 7 tries) to 7 points ( a goal) at Nittawela, yesterday.
At half time the winners led 46-0.
The champion Kandy side was meeting the eighth placed team in the league table and the gulf in the class was quite obvious. The Old Zahirians did not help their cause by dropping some passes and missing tackles. To add to their misery, Zubaideen was off target with four penalty conversions.
At least ten Kandy players got in on the scoring act, with Eranda Weerakkody topping the list with three. However it was scrum half Krishantha Rajapakse who caught the eye with two dandy tries, using the side step with great aplomb.
Besides the above mentioned Saman Dias also scored two tries while Imran Bistamin, Kapila de Silva, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, Nalaka Weerakkody, Dilip Chelvam, Aravinda Udangamuwa and Prasad Chathuranga scored a try each.
Eranda Weerakkody goaled five tries while Nalaka Weerakkody goaled two. The other attempts by the former went astray. Lock Kamil Haji scored for the Old Zahirians off a good move in the second half and it was converted by centre Rizwan Nanan.
