Kadir killing: Suspects released on bail

The two suspects arrested in connection with the assassination of former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar were recently allowed bail by Colombo High Court Deepali Wijesundera. The men who had been in remand for two and a half years were granted bail in Rs. 100,000 cash and one million rupees surety bail each.

The judge warned the two suspects Thamil Eethiyan and Rangan Janagam that if they failed to report to the Colombo Crime Division while out on bail, their bail would be immediately cancelled and they would be re-remanded.

The two men were taken into custody following the killing of the minister alleging that the two suspects from the upcountry had come to Colombo fifteen days before the date of the crime and were taking photographs after the killing.

Senior counsel for the suspects Appathurai Vinayagamoorthy urged the court to release his clients on bail, as there was no evidence to implicate them with the murder or for taking photographs of Mr. Kadirgamar’s house. State Counsel appearing on behalf of the Attorney General did not object to the bail application. Cinnamon Gardens Police led evidence.
