Celebrating 30 years
as a dramatist
Aang Devpura (There’s Heaven), a play by Jagath Muthukumarana will be staged at the Lumbini Theatre today, January 13, at 6.30 p.m., celebrating Muthukumarana’s 30 year career as a dramatist.
The play revolves around a village chieftain who faces an usual dilemma – whether to kill a wild elephant that is threatening to destroy the village crops or to accept the help of a “god” who descends to help him and take him to “heaven” in exchange for his word that he will not harm the elephant, (but unbeknownst to him, the “god” craves the material luxuries of the mortals).
The play was written by Saman Pushpakumara, presented by Paravi Rena and is a production of Rusara.
Jagath Muthukumarana started his career in 1977 as a member of Dr. Gamini Hattotuwa’s open air street drama outfit. Since then he has actively taken part in many works by other prominent dramatists. He is also an accomplished actor, playwright, director, children’s writer, television script writer and director. |
