Houses handed over to tsunami affected
Ten new houses built at Beraliyawatta village in Baddegama were handed over on January 1 by Hela Sarana to families who had lost their homes in the tsunami, to mark the third anniversary of the catastrophe.
These houses were built under Phase 2 of Hela Sarana's housing programme, now totalling 75. Five more houses are under construction at the same site and will be completed in March. Under Phase 2, houses were allocated to families affected by the tsunami still living in temporary accommodation who had homes within the 60-metre prohibition zone.
The land was allocated by the government and Fredericks Foundation-UK, Wates Foundation-UK and the Old Anandians-UK Branch funded the construction work. Kumagai Corporation assisted in site-levelling and construction of access roads. |
