SLTA selects Junior squads
The Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) has announced its junior players for the international tournaments, scheduled in the next few months. These players were chosen after a series of trials and have qualified to enter the final team/s – not only to represent SLTA but to represent and play for Sri Lanka.
The selected players nominated by the selection committee of the SLTA will play at the pre qualifying matches for the Junior Davis Cup – Under 16, Junior Fed Cup Under - 16, World Juniors Championship – Boys and for the World Juniors Championship – Girls. The average age of the team is Under 14 They would all compete with other countries in the region to qualify for the main matches.
The selected junior players for each tournament are as follows;
Junior Davis Cup;: Amresh Jayawickrama, Arvind Fernando and Shehan Gomesz
Junior Fed Cup; Amrita Muttiah, Shenali Weerasekera and Sherene Wijesinghe
World Juniors Championship – Boys; Vimuktha De Alwis, Sharmal Dissanayake and Thuruna Eswarage
World Juniors Championship – Girls; Nilushi Fernando, Shankari Thiyakaran and Dinushki Ranasinghe.
The Junior Davis cup is scheduled to be held from February 22 to 29 in Malaysia. The junior team is coached by Neshan Gunasekera. Seven countries including Sri Lanka from the region would compete at this tournament. The others are Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan.
The Junior Fed cup is scheduled to be held from February 22 to 27 also in Malaysia. The junior team is coached by Mahesha Seniviratne. Four countries including Sri Lanka from the region would compete at this tournament. |
