Vijaya's loss a big blow
to local cinema
20th death anniversary falls on Saturday
The 20th death anniversary of charismatic film star-turned-politician Vijaya Kumaratunga falls next Saturday, but for the people of this country he is still the most popular actor.
The Seeduwa-born film star whose ambition was to someday become a police officer though his parents wanted him to become a doctor, finally made his movie debut in Hanthane Kathawa and before the release of his first film he was signed up by more than 12 filmmakers.
That alone spoke volumes about the talent, dedication and commitment of the people's star who bagged the most popular actor award continuously for several years until his untimely death on February 16, 1988.
Vijaya was the undisputed romantic hero who lived in the fantasy world of tens of thousands of fans. During his last years, his only dream was to clinch the award for the best actor. Though he came closer to winning the award through some spectacular performances, the award did not become a part of his possession. Tragically, when he finally won the award for his powerful role in 'Kedapathaka Chaya' it was just over an year after he was gunned in front of his Polhengoda home. Vijaya was not only a good actor but also a good singer. Above all, almost all film personalities who had associated Vijaya vouch for the fact that beyond everything else, he was a real human being.
