Rohantha's Reggae
By Shane Seneviratne
Rohantha is one of the leading reggae musicians in Sri Lanka today.
Hailing from Kandy, Rohantha performed at Garden Club Kandy recently with the participation of a large number of local and foreign audience, where he launched his first album.
Rohantha is one of the oldest musicians who introduced reggae music styles to Sri Lankan audience. His first Reggae concert was held in 2000 at the town hall of Nuwara Eliya over the years he had been continuously performing in universities, beach side and street concerts throughout Sri Lanka.
His Reggae journey began as early as 1986 when he first heard Reggae rhythms and was so moved by them that he did in depth research into this genre. He studied and learned as much as he could about the origins and ways of Reggae. During his search, Bob Marley became his favorite music artiste and to this day remains his top inspiration. For Rohantha it became a way of life and a soul journey.
‘The vibration stayed with me and made me to think about what is the energy of nature? Who am I? and What is this life, really? It opened a spiritual path for me of staying very close to Nature and people. I see Reggae as a music style that can help us realize ourself--a way to self-realization’.
‘The father in Reggae music used this unique music style to voice against the social injustice and in almost all his songs there was a plead to rise against the injustices’ Rohantha said about Bob Marley who inspired him in music and in his way of living.
According to Rohantha, Reggae music style became popular in Europe in 1970s while it reached Sri Lankan a decade later.
In 2003 Rohantha took his music to Germany, in 2004 to Austria.
In 2006-2007 he shared his music with a wide audience in the US. He now has friends in countries around the world, including Jamaica, Italy, France, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, USA, Japan, England, Australia, Slovenia, Costa Rica and more.
