Favourites through to semis at Reid Avenue

The preliminary round and quarter finals of the ABA Junior Boxing Championship which ended yesterday at the Royal College g ring at Reid Avenue saw most of the fancied boxers advance to the semi finals which is due to be held today at the same venue. The championship conducted by the Amateur Boxing Association.

The quarter finals of eight weight categories were worked off yesterday. S.N.M. Nissanka of Vidyartha and H.A.Y. Hettiarachchi of St Aloysius qualified to the semi finals of the Bantamweight Under 54kgs category while R.M. Weerasinghe of Taxila Central, J.A. Ahamed of Pilimatalawa ‘A’, T.M.P.

Totagodawatte of Sarasavi Uyana and P.H. de Silva of Sri Sumangala Panadura advanced to the semis of the Featherweight Under 57kgs.

In the Lightweight Under 60kgs P.G.D. Premawansa of Pilimatalawa ‘A’, A.L. Amerasinghe of Wickramasheela ‘A’ and G.H.G. Madhushanka of Kingswood made it to the semis. W.D. Mendis of Pannala NS, C.P. Madhushanka of Gandara, M.M. Perera and H.M. Herath both of Vidyartha boxed their way in the Light Flyweight Under 48kgs.

A.M.A. Nuwan kept the Pannala NS flag flying when he outfoxed P.M. Ranasinghe in the Pin-weight Under 46kgs while in the same category the others to enter the semi finals were U.R.N. Rajapakse of Pilimatalawa, T.D. Ranasinghe of Dharmaraja and Y.P. Chulasiri of Veyangoda BC. The semi final due to held late in the evening yesterday were postponed to be held today. Today is the final day of the championship and the semi finals are due to be held from 4.00 p.m. onwards which will be followed by the finals scheduled for late in the evening.
