Sixteen-year old Charith Fernando hit an unbeaten knock of 80 which included a six and ten fours to rescue St. Sebastian’s from the ignominy of an outright defeat against D.S. Senanayake at Moratuwa yesterday.
St. Sebastian’s who conceded a first innings lead of 138 runs when they were all out for 192 runs in their first innings were soon in trouble losing their first two wickets with only 15 runs on board. However the three drop batsman stood his ground along with Anuk Fernando who also scored an unbeaten knock of 34 to deny the visitors the taste sweet success.
Earlier D.S. Senanayake medium pacer Charith Jayampathy returned the impressive figures of 5 for 61 to give D.S. Senanayake a hope of victory in the morning session.
Besides Jayampathy, all rounder Naveen Kavikara also impressed for D.S. Senanayake by scoring an unbeaten knock of 52 runs and also capturing three for 52 in the Sebastian first innings.
