With the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge by "unidentified" gunmen on Thursday morning, media freedom in Sri Lanka finally reached an all time low. In a week that had already seen an unprovoked and devastating attack on a leading independent broadcaster, MTV, the death of such a well-known editor was the final straw. In and around the small town of Gruyeres in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, the village cheese dairies still manufacture a speciality cheese according to the traditional ancestral recipe, handed down over centuries. Produced since 1115 AD, this cheese was given the name Gruyere in 1602. In 2001, it was awarded ‘Appellation d’Origine Controlee’ (AOC) status, an indication of its quality and origin.
