Academy of Design offers a wide range of Graphic Design courses

Graphic design today is far away from the long days of mouse - clicking, choosing typefaces, software and paper samples. Graphic design today is a combination of graphics, advertising and multimedia design.

'Graphic Design in Sri Lanka is often synonymous with Computers. But in reality it's only part of the story. Graphic Design is a reflective, problem-solving discipline: a creative process that combines art and technology to visually convey a message to an audience. The graphic designer uses diverse forms of communication beyond the printed matter that is the graphic designer's mainstay. In essence, graphic designers utilize the traditions, cultural heritage, symbols, and civic values of preceding generations into visual forms that are used everyday by nearly everyone.

At the Academy of Design, students learn to formulate vibrant and efficient communication solutions with the imagination of an artist and the meticulousness of a scientist. The Graphic Design Programme stresses creative and intellectual thinking as well as awareness of individual, social, and cultural issues. At the same time, students learn to be concerned about ethical implications and impact on the community. Students are introduced to new technology and use various mediums to translate the verbal message into visual language.

Students gain skills in solving communication problems through research in addition to identifying and evaluating the client and audience needs. These skills enable them to create appropriate and powerful solutions to the tasks assigned.

While students learn about Communication Design in the classroom, they are also exposed to the professional world through guest lectures and field trips aimed at enhancing their knowledge of design in both the academic and professional aspects of the discipline.

Careers
Graduates gain employment in: publishing; web design; advertising; branding; illustration; animation; TV and Video production; graphic design; photography.

A decade ago, design was considered a hobby in Sri Lanka. But now more recently it is being recognized as a profession and a serious educational discipline. This is an important step forward. While many have long known and believed design to be a serious profession, the academy has strived to confirm this belief and has made it a reality. The Academy believes strongly in the importance of the recognition of design as a profession, the academy undergraduate programmes prepare graduates, in combination with the requisite experience and knowledge to be professional designers. Future generations of designers must perform at ever higher levels of professionalism in order to sustain this confidence. The Academy of Design is proud to be a vital part of Colombo's educational and cultural life and a creative force in the continued growth of design as both an educational discipline and a dynamic profession. The Academy hopes that having read this, you will share its enthusiasm for the study of design.
