As expected the 75th Battle of the Saints encounter between St Joseph’s and St Peter’s concluded in a tame draw at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday. Josephians chasing a target of 193 runs for victory ended the day on 113 for 5.
But the match turned out to be a memorable one for Josephian deputy skipper Hareen Silva as he made an unbeaten 141 in the first inning and then followed it up with another unbeaten knock of 56.
Earlier in the day the Josephians resuming on their overnight score of 188 for 5 after facing 11 more overs left to bat ended their quota of 60 overs making 258 without losing a wicket.
In the process Josephian deputy skipper Hareen Silva who has never even scored a half ton was the toast of his team mates and supporters. Having remained unbeaten on 98 the previous day he went on to add a further 43 runs to his tally making an unbeaten 141 and thus created a new Josephian batting record when he eclipsed the record of 131 made by Dimuth Karunaratne in 2007.
The opening day’s play saw the Peterites being invited to bat by Joesphian skipper Shameera Weerasinghe fall into deep trouble as left arm pacie Treshan Rajasooriya had them reeling on 19 for 3. But it was all that he could do.
Peterite skipper Angelo Perera joining opener Andri Berenger saved the side from disaster with a valuable 134 runs partnership for the fourth wicket before Angelo was dismissed for a well compiled 63 which had nine boundaries.
