Barring any last minute mishaps, the schools rugby league season is set to kick off next month. April 25 sees four games, two of which are worthy of a final. The last Saturday of April sees St. Peter’s play host to Isipatana at Bambalapitiya while, Royal will clash with perennial rivals S. Thomas’ at the CR and FC Grounds at Longden Place.
League Champions Kingswood make their appearance on the same day when they take on newly promoted Mahanama at Bogambara, and runners up Trinity play St. Joseph’s at Pallekelle.
The league draw does not get any easier for Royal. The first Saturday in May will see them visiting St. Peter’s at Bambalapitiya. On the same day St. Joseph’s will play Kingswood at Havelock Park while S. Thomas’ host Trinity at Longden Place.
The Club League season is not scheduled to start till the third week of May and on the second Saturday three matches are down for decision namely Isipatana – Kingswood, S. Thomas – St. Joseph’s and St. Peter’s – Trinity.
The Schools league is slated to end in the first ten days of June with the knockouts starting soon after. Meanwhile, the First Leg of the Bradby Shield is scheduled to be played May 30.
With regard to the national scene, Chairman of the Interim Committee of rugby Dr. Maiya Gunasekera speaking to The Sunday Times said; “I plan to have a discussion on constitutional reforms with regard to the voting system later this week. Following the discussions we will submit the report
through the Attorney General’s department to the Minister of Sports Gamini Lokuge. I have informed the International Rugby Board (IRB) that we are still waiting for the audit report and that once all the
preparations are complete we will call for the Annual General Meeting (AGM). I believe that we should be able to hold the AGM in about two to two and a half months time.”
