CEO Mendis to resign

The Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee secretary, Nishantha Ranatunga, in an interview with The Sunday Times delved into the most-talked about-question in town. It was about the post of the additional Chief Executive Officer the new IC was going to create.

It is reported that former Sri Lankan opener Ajith Jayasekera will first join the SLC as additional CEO and later replace the administrative veteran Duleep Mendis who has served the longest in that position at Sri Lanka Cricket.

Elaborating on the matter Ranatunga said, “Yes, the post would be created and we have had a few rounds of talk on the matter.
Exactly what we need here is a person who could handle the day-to-day administrative functions without any hiccups. Once this is done, Duleep could concentrate only on cricket which is his strong point. Since we assumed duties here we saw some lapses in the administrative side and we want to minimize those”.
However Mendis who, according to cricket sources, has been treated harshly since the advent of the new Interim Committee is said to be not happy with the move and is likely to tender his resignation in the very near future.

Mendis joined the SLC ranks as the National Cricket Development Manager in 200 at the invitation of the then elected SLC chairman Thilanga Sumathipala. He replaced Anura Tennekoon as the Chief Executive Officer in 2004 and has served in that position for five years.
