Police stun CR and FC

Police caused arguably the biggest upset on the first day in the Super Ten rugby tournament for clubs organized by the Western Province Rugby Football Association and played at the CR and FC grounds at Longden Place yesterday.

Led by stand off Harshana Wijeweera, Police beat CR and FC by 14 points to nil in their round robin game.
Another club who stirred up some excitement was the Puffins led by Richard Mundy and comprising of both expatriates and locals. Unfortunately the Puffins could not make a major impact and will play Havelocks ‘B’ in the first of the Bowl semi finals today.

Following is the rest of the line up of matches for today.
Cup Quarter Finals; Police – Petersons, Air Force – Old Zahirians, CR and FC – CH and FC and Havelocks ‘A’ – Army.
Bowl Quarter Finals – Havelocks ‘B’ – Puffins, Colombo University – Old Zahirians, Old Sebastianites – Gampaha RFC and Kotalawela Defense Academy – Moratuwa University.

The losers in the Cup quarter finals will go in to the Plate semi finals, while the clubs that are beaten in the Bowl quarter finals will clash in the Shield semi finals.

Panadura RFC will take on Kiribathgoda RFC in the final of the Saucer.

Meanwhile, Kiran Attapatu of the Interim Committee for rugby in Sri Lanka said that the Lankan team for the Asian Division One Championships to be played in Dubai early next month, would be finalized on Tuesday.
